#blacklivesmatter Educational List

In this blog post, I have compiled a list of things you can read/watch/listen to, to educate and inform yourself on the #blacklivesmatter campaign. I have also included some petitions that need as many signatures as we can gather!

Firstly, there are plenty of books and articles that you can read. Some of these are focused on White supremacy, and how the Caucasian race can educate themselves, whereas some focus upon first hand experiences of Black people and the oppression faced in their daily lives:

1) The Hate You Give- Angie Thomas (check out my latest blog post to understand why I found this so powerful!)

2) Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race- Reni Eddo-Lodge

3) Me and White Supremacy- Layla F Saad

4) White Fragility- Robin Diangelo

5) Noughts and Crosses- Malorie Blackman (although this is reversed societal racism, it is a great insight if you struggle to understand the oppression Black people face, as it paints a picture as to what it would be like if this happened to ‘your people’)

6) Dark Days- James Baldwin (suggested by my English teacher!)

7) How to Be an Antiracist- Ibram X. Kendi

8) Sister Outsider- Audre Lorde (contains the famous 1984 essay ‘The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle The Master’s House’ which also has a feminist touch.)

9) The End of Policing- Alex S. Vitale

For many people, they find they learn much better by watching things and seeing events physically unfold. I find things on screen incredibly powerful and I’m sure many of you will too:

1) The Hate U Give- 20th Century Fox (subtle changes from the book but still incredibly moving)

2) Hidden Figures- 20th Century Fox (recommended by a viewer, it explores African American women who worked for NASA and were involved in the launch of astronaut John Glenn!!)

3) When They See Us- Netflix (I found this very hard and emotional to watch but it was extremely powerful)

4) In fact, Netflix have now introduced a ‘Black Lives Matter’ category, so if you have this facility, I strongly recommend taking a look.

5) The Rise of Black Lives Matter- https://youtu.be/tgFI0phqRIY

6) There are plenty of videos you can stream if you cannot afford to donate to the cause, for example https://youtu.be/WKo8OrBdLz8

Alongside streaming music with proceeds towards #blacklivesmatter there are plenty of podcast you can listen to to further your insight. I have found all of mine on Spotify as, for me, this is my most readily accessed platform:

1) Black History Buff Podcast (recommended by a viewer, each week the host introduces a new piece of Black History which is often sadly forgotten in the modern day)

2) The Black Curriculum (similar to the above, widen your knowledge with a new piece of syllabus each week)

3) GirlTrek’s Black History Bootcamp (for 21 days, learn about a new Black woman everyday!)

4) There are also many playlists consisting of Black artists music such as, Who We Be, Black History and Black History Salute. Celebrate the amazing work Black artists create!!!

Finally, it is vital that we keep signing petitions! Here are a few that still currently need your support:

I appreciate it is impossible for anyone to read every material out there, and watch every TV Programme, but it is important to take the time to educate yourself as much as possible- it is much easier to support a cause, when you are well informed on the topic! Keep fighting!!!! #blacklivesmatter
